Sorry I’ve been pretty quiet the last month! I’ve been swamped with the upcoming move to Maryland. TWENTY DAYS! That’s all we have left here. I can’t believe it. I’m sad, but excited. I can’t wait to check out my new home and meet lots of new people!

Anyone who knows me will tell you, the sea holds my heart. Perhaps this is genetic, as the open water held my father in a powerful spell as well. I don’t know how to explain it, other than no matter what might be happening, if I have the ocean nearby – all is well in my world. One of my favorite quotes:

The cure for anything is saltwater – sweat, tears, or the sea. – Isak Dinesen

For me, these are the truest words ever spoken. The sea grounds me, takes away the hurt, makes me whole. I love the call of the surf – its gentle whisper in your ear, beckoning you near. Many times in my life, I’ve confided in her, trusted her with my heart, and looked to her for comfort.

Each time my work takes me to the shore, my heart feels twice as full. Two of the things I love the most: the ocean and photography, colliding and joining forces. Perfection.

When Sara approached me about having part of her session at the beach, with a warm and toasty campfire and s’mores, how could I say no? Dreams do come true. And by the way, this is an awesome date night idea.

You’re probably noticing the shift in my watermarking. I apologize if it is distracting. I am trying to keep it minimal. This one is just a work in progress and definitely not permanent. However, given the current state of things where photos are being stolen by other so-called photographers ALL THE TIME, I felt it was necessary to protect myself and more importantly, PROTECT MY CLIENTS. Thanks for bearing with me on that!

I knew when I started planning my daughter’s 5th birthday milestone session, I wanted something amazing. I wanted a fabulous location. A great dress and accessories. But I didn’t want to go so over the top with planning and styling that we lost the essence of her free spirit in the process. It was a little bittersweet, knowing it would be her last portrait session in California – at least for a while. I knew that this session would mark several milestones, so I wanted to make sure it was done right, whatever the cost. As usual, she was involved from start to finish. If there is anything I can stress to my clients, it would be to truly invest in your session – your time, your interest, and yes, even money. The more connected you feel to the session, the better your photos will be. I hear it all the time: “Oh your daughter is so well-behaved to pose for you like that.” Here’s the truth: No. She is invested in the session, as am I, so I’m able to just let her be herself and the photographs come naturally. The more you force a child to do something they think is boring or restrictive, the fewer “good” photos you’ll get. By allowing her creative license in this process, it becomes fun, an adventure. And as always, timing was everything – such perfect, beautiful sunset light….

I do want to make a note…several people have asked me about shooting at this location. They are wonderful to work with, but do have a strict calendar and an hourly fee ($100/hr at the time of publication). Please be courteous to Keys Creek and make a reservation. Do not just arrive at the farm and hope to shoot. There are fewer and fewer truly photographer-friendly places like this one lately. Let’s maintain a great relationship with these other small businesses. Thank you.

Can you promise to do this exact shoot as her Senior pictures? Same type of dress, same location (ish) … I’d be amazing.

Hehe, I would LOVE to. At some point when she is older, it is my goal to recreate some of her past shoots. It’d be great for her senior photos. ?

Alexa // Class of 2014 // Swoon Senior Spokesmodel

Happy Monday! It’s rainy and cold here today, so I figured we needed something bright on the blog! I also have to share: the all new Swoon Seniors website and blog is LIVE!!! Anyway, you probably remember Alexa from her mini session a few months ago. She will be a senior at Del Norte High School in Escondido this coming fall, and I’ve been so honored to work with her twice already! Last weekend, we photographed her full graduate session as a Swoon Senior Spokesmodel. I had a blast! We started out in La Jolla, where we found a little stretch of beach that was just perfect. The seals were super curious about us, and kept swimming over to see what we were up to. SO CUTE!! After knocking that part of the session out of the park, we headed over to Liberty Station – NTC for some urban grunge. Check out her full session!

Hi Angela,
After viewing your senior portrait sessions, I’ve become more and more interested in your photography!
I’m actually from Utah, and it’s crazy to say I’m looking at photographers near San Diego. I’m going to be in San Diego April 12-18 and I wanted to do something out of the box for my pictures- like out of state!
So maybe if you’re free any of those days, and you’re interested, I would really love to have you be my photographer!
