Valley of Fire Part I – Elopement | Maryland Wedding Photographer

WPPI – Day 2: Tuesday

This Maryland Wedding ‘tog heads to the desert!

I think I warned you all that I have a lot to share from my trip to Las Vegas for the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International conference! My second day, Tuesday, was spent at the Cactus & Lace styled shootout in the Valley of Fire State Park, about an hour outside Las Vegas. I love the desert. LOVE it! It made me very homesick for the hillsides of Southern California. Valley of Fire is absolutely beautiful, and I can see why it is a favorite with photographers. The landscapes are almost alien looking, and certainly breathtaking. Our amazing hosts put together a fabulous shootout workshop complete with three different setups, including a wedding, an elopement, and a high fashion senior. We split off into small groups and rotated through each setup. Details, fun models, and the location made it totally unforgettable! What a fabulous experience for this Maryland Wedding Photographer!

I’m going to share these images with you in three separate posts, because there are just so many that I love. The first set I’ll share is from the desert elopement set. This couple had only met that day, but had a great chemistry! (Really – CHECK THEM OUT! HOT HOT HOT!) Models work very hard for us at these workshops. It isn’t easy having 10 people telling you to pose this way, look that way. It is quite demanding! But all five of our models for this shootout were fun, graceful, and easy to work with! It was SO much fun!! See for yourself!

So, you can probably see that this was a stunning location for photographs! As much as I love every Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland wedding venue I’ve captured, being out in the desert is refreshing! I love the challenge of the bright overhead sun, the dry air, the wind, and the exotic landscapes. It is a nice change of pace! I also realized how much I would love photographing more elopements and private wedding ceremonies, whether at “home” in the Washington DC/Maryland/Virginia area, or in places like Las Vegas, Miami, Denver, Seattle, NYC and beyond!

There is much more to come from the wedding and high fashion senior portions of this shootout later this week. Be sure to check back in!

Washington DC Wedding Photographer | WPPI – Sunflower Shootout Part II

Angela Goes to WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International)

So you may have seen a little of what I was up to earlier this month in Las Vegas here on this post.  I talked a little about why a wedding photographer might enjoy WPPI, and a little of what goes on there, but I did not share exactly what I did. So here goes!

WPPI typically lasts a full week, however, I mostly attend for the tradeshow and independent events. This year, I had a 4-day whirlwind WPPI experience. Though my time in Las Vegas was very brief, it was very productive!! (And I managed to only gamble away about $40 on penny slots, just to say I “did it”.)  The days were long, and I packed every minute I could with new information and shooting, so the next couple of blog posts will walk you through my week!

Day 1: Monday

Monday morning was an early one. Up and out the door for the airport before the sun was up.  I am not a morning person. Let me repeat: I. AM. NOT. A. MORNING. PERSON. But the excitement of meeting up with some of my closest photographer friends had me excited enough that I managed to make it on only one very large cup of airport java.  Our flight ended up delayed, so it was a little dicey making it to my first planned WPPI stop: the Sunflower Wedding Shootout. I did arrive just in time, and I am so glad I did! About 20 fellow wedding photographer friends boarded a van with me to the location.

As mentioned in my previous post, the shootout was held at the Legends Ranch in Las Vegas, only about 10 minutes away from the MGM Grand, which hosts WPPI. It was amazing to me how rural the Legends Ranch felt, just a few minutes away from the lights and hustle of the Strip. It was like stepping out of the van and into the west. I was actually excited to see some horses, but sadly, equine portraits were not on the agenda. The grounds of the ranch were perfect and diverse for a styled shoot. We had a swimming pool, barns, stone staircases, shaded courtyards and so much more to work with. I only wish we had a longer day! (Silly sunset!!)

Emma + Josh did a fantastic job of planning every detail for this shoot. The models looked absolutely amazing, and the details were thorough. If a couple had the desire to, they could have been married right then and there, and had everything they needed! Invitations, place settings, escort cards, cake, signage, candy bar – nothing was overlooked! (There were even rings!) Despite the fact that I’d had a very long day of travel, I was excited to work with such a wonderful setting and theme. The photographers split up into smaller groups of 3-6 people, and worked our way around the ranch with the models. One thing that struck me after seeing some of my friends’ images is how different they all are. There was so much to shoot, and so many opportunities around the venue, there was very little duplication. It’s also fun seeing through their eyes, and learning from one another. We shared tips on posing, lighting, and even gear. One of the best parts of shootouts, besides lovely new images, is learning and sharing.

By the time the sun finally set in the mountains just outside the city, it was time to go back to the MGM Grand and grab some dinner. It was a great evening reconnecting with friends from WPPI past and present. And of course, I had to get back to the room to download my memory cards and look at all the goodies from the day. Thank you to Emma + Josh and all the vendors that made this shootout work. I know it’s a lot of effort to coordinate an event like this one!

**You will see that I threw a couple of black & white conversions in to the mix here – something I usually don’t do. But these shootouts are also about breaking out of your comfort zone (mine is vibrant color) and thinking in new ways. A few of these images I envisioned in monochrome while shooting. Let me know what you think!

Washington DC Wedding Photographer | WPPI 2015 Sunflower Shootout at Legends Ranch

WPPI: The annual event every wedding photographer looks forward to!

Each year, wedding and portrait photographers gather for a week in Las Vegas, NV for one of the biggest professional development events in our industry: WPPI. The conference itself is packed with classes, platform speakers, and even a fabulous trade show where I typically find new products and services to offer to my clientele, but there are also many independent opportunities to grow. Even for those who go simply for the networking possibilities will benefit. There are so many things to do, learn, and see!  As a wedding photographer,  one of my favorite things to do during WPPI is attend independent shootouts!

What is a Shootout?

I’ve been asked by both photographers as well as those outside the industry, “What is a shootout?” A shootout is a type of workshop, usually stylized to fit a theme, and present ample opportunity to photograph for one’s portfolio and development. It’s a great opportunity to learn from some of our industry’s most amazing wedding photographers, including other attendees. Personally, I love to attend workshops and shootouts for the connections I make. I meet so many other photographers from all over the world. We trade ideas, teach each other new skills, and really enjoy our time together. Shootouts and workshops are occasionally a few hours in length, while others are full-day experiences. No matter how long, they are always my favorite part of WPPI!

Let’s see the photographs!

In the coming week, I’ll be sharing lots of images from the two shootouts/workshops I attended earlier this month in Las Vegas. The first was the Sunflower Shootout hosted by Couture Clicks at the Legends Ranch, just minutes off the strip. Emma + Josh styled a gorgeous theme, incorporating one of my favorite colors: yellow, and one of my favorite flora: sunflowers! Our models were gorgeous and handsome, the details thoroughly exquisite! But you can see for yourself below! I think my favorite part of this particular shootout was the details! Nothing was missed!

I’ll share more from this shootout later in the week. There is just too much to get into one blog post!!

Personal Journal: I Wish _____________ | Maryland & Virginia Wedding Photographer

That’s a big blank up there, isn’t it? Around the beginning of the year, my social media feeds were flooded with resolutions, goals and much more. I may not have mentioned it publicly, but one of my own goals was to get more personal here on my blog, and to post more often, whether personal or professional. Writing is cathartic, but it is also empowering. Which brings me back to that big empty space in the title of this post. If I could do anything, what would I wish for?

Imagine you have a notebook in front of you, completely empty – blank pages waiting to be filled with your story. That is what I have right now, figuratively of course! (I own many notebooks, and their pages don’t stay blank for long! I’m a notebook kind of girl!) I am beginning a process for my business, and it’s a big undertaking, but it will become my story. I am starting what is referred to as “rebranding”.  I won’t go into the nitty gritty of everything involved, but trust me when I say, it is intense. One of the most important tasks is to dig deeply into who I am, and how that translates into my studio and work. After all, I chased this dream nearly eight years ago as a means of being true to who I am and expressing myself.

So, what have I discovered? Well, first off – I haven’t been doing this for me. I’ve been more concerned with catering to what others expect, and that results in a disservice to myself, my clients, and my family. I spend too much time worrying about what others are doing….other photographers, their clients, etc. That’s no way to live! I became a full-time photographer in 2007 to produce beautiful images that reflect my style and vision. Instead, I spent countless hours looking at what others were doing instead of looking inward. The result was fruitless.

Another thing I discovered: My brand isn’t me, and it should most certainly be me. It should tell you who I am, but right now it doesn’t. Are you beginning to see a theme here? Yes, I’m having a “Me Moment”.  I aim to bring more of myself into my photography, which can only be a good thing. I’m no longer worried about the other stuff. I’m only focused on being me, improving myself, and showing everyone who I am.

So, you’re going to start seeing some major changes coming to Powell Woulfe Photography. For starters, I’ll be getting a lot more personal here. Sharing more of my process, and heart. You’ll see more posts like this one. More of my personal work. Speaking of which, I will be shooting a lot more for myself, and from now on focusing my professional work on seniors, couples and weddings. I already announced last year that I will be taking families on a very limited basis, and that will continue in 2015.  Swoon Seniors is still very much a large part of who I am, as well, but I will continue to keep the two separate.  I don’t want to give it all away, but keep your eyes peeled for the unveiling of me, for when I am myself, I am better able to serve my clients.

Back to that big blank space up there…. There are so many ways I could complete that sentence, “I wish ________________.”  But what I really need to focus on are the ways to complete that sentence that are productive. I could wish for success, or money, or talent, or hundreds of new clients, etc., but none of that is helpful in helping me find my way back to myself. For now, I will just leave it as, I wish to write my own story.
