Swoon Seniors: What to Wear || San Diego Senior Photographer

Here it is, my last post from the Seniorologie Shootout. I know I took forever to post all these, but it’s because I had a hard time deciding which ones to choose – LOVE THEM ALL!!!

I know there has been a lot of buzz about styled sessions, and what to wear for your session. I’ve created a pinterest board full of current ideas, from great brands like Anthropologie, The Gap, Forever 21, Altard State, Hollister and a LOT more. There is something there for every budget. I look forward to growing this board as each season changes. Be sure to check it out, especially if you find yourself stuck on what to wear for your Swoon Senior Sesh!

That said, I wanted to use these images to point out how easy it is to “style” a session. Hailee is wearing clothing from Hollister, easy to find, affordable, and easy to make into this ADORABLE outfit! Just add hair and accessories, and BOOM! SO easy, SO fun, SO cute! Wanna talk about how we can style a session just for you? I’ll even go shopping with you. 😉 Just drop me a note: angela@powellwoulfe.com.

A Desert Princess || San Diego Senior Photographer

I’m back with Part III of IV from the Las Vegas Seniorologie Shootout! I’m not going to ramble a lot today (thank goodness, right?), but I did want to mention the importance of location. Obviously, we had a SMOKIN’ location for this shootout. The ghost town right outside of Vegas was amazing, and gave us so many unique opportunities. I know we are a little short on ghost towns in the San Diego area, but there are lots of unique locations to customize YOUR session. Get out of the rut, and think out of the box for locations. Or, think about a way to make a traditional location feel different. For example, just yesterday I suggested to one of my seniors that we try shooting in the early morning at the beach. Her session will be during that time of year that San Diego is famous for the “May Gray” and “June Gloom”, and in the morning there is even more fog and low clouds. Not something you see everyday in beach sessions…and it will be AMAZING! So, what can we do to make YOUR session a little different? Maybe a drive out to the mountains? Or if you’re game, we can even go out to the ghost town. 😉

Enjoy these images from our time with Asia. I just loved working with her, and how willing she was to try something a little weird (like holding a sheep skull!?!) Also, be sure to go check out the website for the new look! I am really excited about it! Swoon Seniors by Powell Woulfe Photography. (Oh, and I almost forgot…book your senior sesh for April, and you get FREE digital images!!! That’s HUGE! But only a few dates remain.)

Elements of a GREAT Senior Sesh || San Diego Senior Photographer

I’m back with Part II of the awesome Seniorologie shootout in Las Vegas! I thought that this time, I’d share a couple of things that I loved about this shootout, which happen to be things that make any senior session fun and gives great pics!

One of the first things I loved about working with these gals is that they are not afraid to step outside their comfort zone. Trying new things is a BLAST! And that can mean wearing something you love but wouldn’t normally buy, doing your hair or makeup a new way, trying a completely off the wall location, etc. Yes, we want your senior session to be about YOU, but you’d be amazed at the amount of YOU that can shine through when you make it a true adventure.  The truck we used in this set of photos was….well, OLD. The seat was not the most comfortable (or pretty), but Gabi hopped right in and worked it. The color and shape of the truck window made an amazing frame to her beautiful face.

One of the other things I loved about working with Gabi is her willingness to just do something silly. Yup, we got silly. One of our great photographers that hosted the shoot found this super cool, broken down old bicycle. We grabbed it and had Gabi pose with it, pretend to ride it (even though no one in their right mind is riding a bike in the middle of a desert ghost town!), and we just had fun. Again, it’s about stepping outside your comfort zone, and just being YOU.

One of the best tips I can give my seniors is to trust me to make your images look FAB. It isn’t all about the clothes, or the location, or the props. It’s about bringing YOU out. (Do I sound like a broken record? Well, it’s because it is true!) I may look like a fool when I’m down on the ground, or climbing a bench or a tree to get that perfect shot. You might even feel a little weird in some of the poses I direct you into. but trust me. Relax and just go with it. When you don’t relax into a pose, it begins to look awkward and stiff, and believe me when I say it will come through in your photos. I will never do anything to put any of my clients at risk, so have a little faith, and we’ll run with it!

Also, it’s great to bring ideas with you to your session. I’ve had seniors and other clients bring me sample photos, even entire boards on Pinterest. AWESOME! But….yes, there is a but….let’s take that idea and put a spin on it to make it uniquely YOU.  You hired me to take your senior portraits that didn’t look like every other senior picture, so let’s make this amazing!

My last bit of advice for today: Limit the number of people you bring along to your session. “Officially”, I say limit it to one parent and/or one friend. The more people you have as an audience, the more you will be thinking about THEM and not about YOU. It makes a big difference!!

A Wild West Shootout || San Diego Senior Photographer

If you follow either Powell Woulfe Photography or Swoon Seniors on Facebook, you’ve seen some of these incredible images.  But I thought I’d share a bit about the experience, for those of you who have no idea what a shootout is, or for my photographer friends who have been considering participating in one.

Each year, there is an incredible event in Las Vegas where thousands and thousands of photographers come from all over the world to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and see the best in the biz. I was unable to attend the full week-long WPPI conference this year, but when I heard that Seniorologie was hosting a shootout, I had to make the trip for one day. There are lots of shootouts during WPPI, but this is the only one I was willing to make the drive for.  So, what’s a shootout? In most instances, a shootout is sponsored by a photographer, studio, or in this case…a blog completely devoted to the science and art of high school senior portraiture. For the shootout, a number of models (in this case, four) are used and photographers (in this case, about 25 of us, I think) spend several hours working with them in different places, lighting, poses, etc. Yes, I’m oversimplifying a bit, but hopefully you get the gist. Our four senior models were each styled with a unique theme, and these girls were absolutely breathtaking. Along the way, we received coaching from some great photographers as well as each other. It was such an invaluable and FUN experience, and we each walked away with hundreds of stunning portfolio images. For this shootout, we worked in small groups, and had about an hour with each model.

Wow. That is all I can say about it. I loved the whole experience. The ghost town was an amazing location to shoot, and even in the harsh, midday desert sun, we still came away with amazing, stunning captures. It was so difficult to narrow down my favorites, I’m still not done!  Seniors, I cannot say it enough…if you are considering a stylized shoot, DO IT. The extra time and yes, money, will pay off in the end. Your personality will shine through, and your senior portraits will be incredibly unique. Don’t be cookie cutter. Be YOU. Consider hiring a makeup artist; have your hair professionally styled. These images are going to be with you for the rest of your life. Make a statement. Be BOLD.

Here are some images from our first model, Kaylee. I am in love with her eyes and hair! Thanks for working so hard!  (Stay tuned this week to see our other three models in action!)
